Truth and Reconciliation

Monday and Tuesday (September 30 and October 1st) are days that the Centre is closed for Truth and Reconciliation.  So, as we end September and consider the upcoming Statutory Day and Pro-D Day, it’s good to remind ourselves of why we hold this day as important:

It Honors Indigenous History and Culture: Truth and Reconciliation Day is a significant day for Indigenous peoples, recognizing the importance of their history, culture, and experiences. It’s a way to honor their resilience and contributions to Canadian society.

It Promotes Understanding and Empathy: By learning about the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples, students can develop a better understanding of their experiences and foster empathy. This can help to break down stereotypes and build stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

It Encourages Critical Thinking: Learning about Truth and Reconciliation can encourage students to think critically about history, social justice, and reconciliation efforts. It can also help them develop a sense of civic responsibility and a desire to create a more equitable society.

It Supports Indigenous Communities: By recognizing and acknowledging the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples (around the world), Truth and Reconciliation Day can help to support Indigenous communities and their ongoing efforts towards healing and reconciliation.

It Sets a Positive Example: It sends a message to students and the wider community that recognizing and addressing historical injustices is important and valuable. This can inspire students to become active citizens and work towards creating a more just and equitable society.

While the Centre is closed on the actual day — we encourage you to wear your “orange shirt” at any time.  Truth and reconciliation is more than a one-day event.
