Giving Thanks Worldwide

 We are all familiar with the fact that Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in both the United States and Canada to express gratitude for the blessings of the past year.  But did you know that there are other traditions and countries that also have occasions for giving thanks.  China celebrates Chung Chiu Moon Festival while South Indians celebrate Pongal.  In Germany, Erntedankfest is celebrated during the Fall.  Japan has Labour Thanksgiving Day on November 23rd and Korea marks the occasion with Chuseok.  Barbados celebrates through the Crop Over Festival and Ghana commemorates Homowo while Malaysia has the Haamatan Harvest Festival.  There are also thanksgiving celebrations that are unique in Netherlands, Israel, Grenada and Liberia and elsewhere. 

Some of the things that all of these thanksgiving occasions have in common and what make the days important are:

While the specific traditions may vary between countries, the underlying theme of gratitude and appreciation remains consistent.  

This coming Friday, Monday and Tuesday (October 11 through 15) are days that the Centre is closed for the Thanksgiving Weekend.  Why not take time during these days to consider whether Thanksgiving could be something that we take into the rest of the year?!
